Kyiv has recorded its first "minus" temperature, ending a frost-free period that lasted nearly 200 days.

On November 5th in Kyiv, the temperature dropped to -2.1 degrees Celsius for the first time this autumn. This marks the end of the frost-free period, which lasted for 198 days, starting from April 21st.

This information was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the Central Geophysical Observatory.

According to the observatory, the average long-term date for the first frost in the air is October 21, and the duration of the frost-free period is 197 days.

The shortest frost-free periods in the capital occurred in 1902 and 1945, lasting just 144 days, while the record-long period was noted in 2023 at 232 days.

"Although winter has already made its presence felt, its official start will occur when the average daily air temperature consistently drops below 0 degrees. The average date for this transition in Kyiv is November 29," the report states.

Autumn Weather

October of this year ranked among the top ten warmest in the capital since 1881. The average monthly air temperature in October in Kyiv was 10.9 degrees, which is 2.3 degrees above the climatic norm.

It is worth noting that September was the warmest in Kyiv's history. The average monthly air temperature was 20.6 degrees Celsius, exceeding the climatic norm by 5.7 degrees. A total of 11 temperature records were set. Meteorological autumn arrived in Kyiv two weeks late on September 30.
