A Russian submarine was spotted near the Philippines, within the country's exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea. President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed "great concern."

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Reuters.

According to media reports, a "Kilo" class Russian submarine was detected 80 nautical miles from the western province of Occidental Mindoro on November 28.

"This raises significant concern. Any intrusion into the western part of the Philippine Sea, into our EEZ, towards our baseline, is a matter of great concern," Marcos stated.

It is also known that the Philippine Navy frigate Jose Rizal established radio contact with the Russian submarine and confirmed its identification as UFA 490 and its intentions.

"The Russian vessel stated that it is waiting for improved weather conditions before heading to Vladivostok, Russia," said Navy representative Roy Vincent Trinidad.

However, he did not specify the reasons for the submarine's presence in the area.

What is known about Russian Kilo-class submarines

Kilo-class submarines are a series of diesel-electric submarines developed in the USSR and manufactured in Russia. They are among the most recognized and effective diesel-electric submarines in the world, thanks to their relatively low noise levels and versatility.

Their purpose is to perform tasks in coastal waters, engage ships and submarines, and strike land targets.

Use in the war against Ukraine

Russia actively employs Kilo-class submarines, particularly Project 636, to launch Kalibr cruise missiles at targets in Ukraine. They are stationed in the Black Sea region, particularly in Sevastopol.

Earlier, we reported that according to the spokesperson for the Naval Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Dmytro Pletenchuk, submarines are the only missile carriers that the Russians can effectively use in the Black Sea. They were last deployed about two weeks ago during an attack on Ukraine.
