The French Minister of Armed Forces, Sébastien Lecornu, proposed the idea that European countries should have arsenals of weapons on their territory that can be swiftly deployed to Ukraine if necessary, as reported by Politeka.net.
According to Le Monde, the aim of this initiative is to ensure Ukraine's security in the future and deter Russia from further aggression. Lecornu stated that discussions on this matter among European nations should commence soon.
"Security guarantees encompass several potential levels... This is an idea we intend to bring forward for discussion so that it can gain support from various European countries," he noted, according to Politeka.
The minister also added that establishing such stockpiles of weapons would not only strengthen Ukraine’s defense but also support Europe’s defense industry after hostilities cease.
Given the ongoing threat from Russia, which still poses a danger to Europe, the creation of strategic reserves will enable a rapid response to potential new challenges immediately following the end of the conflict in Ukraine.
Lecornu emphasized that "the best guarantee of security for Ukraine is its army," which must be capable of defending its territory not only during active combat but also in the post-war period when "the guns fall silent."
