France has developed a super-powerful version of the AASM bomb: what makes it unique?

French high-precision aviation bombs AASM Hammer, weighing 2,000 pounds (925 kg), are expected to achieve full operational capability by the end of 2024.
Во Франции разработали мощную модификацию бомбы AASM: в чем её особенности и преимущества?

The French precision-guided aviation bombs AASM Hammer, weighing 2000 pounds (925 kg), are expected to achieve full operational capability by the end of 2024.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine referring to Zone Militaire.

It is known that the precision kits AASM are produced by Safran Electronics & Defense under the name Hammer. They consist of a guidance kit and a rocket motor to extend range. Such motors are typically fitted to conventional free-fall bombs weighing 227 kg.

However, in 2017, France and the manufacturing company signed a contract worth 85 million euros to adapt the AASM kits for bombs weighing 925 kg, specifically the high-explosive Mk84 and the penetrating BLU109.

"This new weapon will provide the Rafale with enhanced strike capabilities, especially with a payload configuration of up to three 1000 kg AASM on the aircraft," the developer company Safran stated earlier.

The new version of the munition will be usable on Rafale, which are among the most advanced fourth-generation fighters in the world.

AASM

AASM (Armement Air-Sol Modulaire) is a French precision-guided air-to-ground munition known for its modular design. AASM bombs can be equipped with various guidance systems, including inertial, GPS, and laser, allowing them to accurately hit targets at distances of up to 70 km. With these capabilities, AASM ensures effective mission execution in challenging weather conditions and in the face of active enemy air defenses.

The main feature of AASM is its modularity, which allows conventional unguided bombs to be transformed into precision weapons. This munition is actively used by the French Air Force and is exported to other countries to provide precision air support on the battlefield.

It is worth noting that earlier this year, France announced it would supply Ukraine with approximately 50 AASM Hammer bombs monthly. Deliveries are set to begin in January 2024 and will last at least until the end of the year. This means that the Ukrainian military will receive no fewer than 600 French-guided aviation bombs.
