Last week in Warsaw, a bus driver struck a 14-year-old Ukrainian citizen. He later died in the hospital from his injuries.

This was reported by Piotr Skiba, a spokesperson for the district prosecutor's office in Warsaw, as stated by RBK-Ukraine referencing "Radio Svoboda" and PAP.

According to PAP, the bus hit the teenager at a pedestrian crossing on Friday, January 3, around 5:15 PM. The driver did not provide medical assistance to the boy and fled the scene.

Polish law enforcement apprehended the 43-year-old bus driver on Saturday, January 4. At the time of his arrest, he was under the influence of alcohol, with approximately 2 promille in his system.

"The victim is a citizen of Ukraine. The perpetrator is a Polish citizen. After the incident, the suspect hid the minibus in the vicinity of Warsaw. There, he consumed alcohol with a family member," Skiba stated.

He noted that the driver confessed to committing the crime. He faces charges under two articles - for the fatal traffic accident and for fleeing the scene, which carry a penalty of 5 to 20 years in prison, as well as for violating a court-imposed driving ban (from 3 months to 5 years imprisonment).

"The punishment can be increased to 25 years, but he certainly faces at least 5 years behind bars," emphasized the prosecutor's representative.

He added that the prosecutor's office would request that the man be placed in custody.

It should be noted that on January 4, it became known that a driver in Warsaw hit a Ukrainian woman and then punched her in the face.
