In Ukraine, there has been a significant increase in the price of carrots and other vegetables this autumn.
This is due not only to seasonal factors but also to new circumstances that have impacted the market this year, reported 24 Kanál.
Why have carrot prices risen?
In Ukrainian markets, the prices of carrots are rapidly increasing. In October 2024, their cost is 154% higher than in the same period last year, reaching 15 hryvnias.
For comparison, in 2023, a kilogram of carrots cost approximately 6.5 hryvnias.
The main reasons for the increase in carrot prices this year are:
Reduced harvest. Due to unfavorable weather conditions—drought in some regions and decreased humidity in others—the volume of carrot harvests has diminished, leading to a market shortage.
Rising production costs. Ongoing military actions and the overall economic situation have increased expenses for fuel, fertilizers, and other resources needed for growing and transporting carrots, which has affected the final price.
Decrease in sown areas. In regions affected by military actions or under occupation, the sown areas, including those for carrot cultivation, are shrinking.
Demand exceeding supply. Against the backdrop of supply shortages, demand remains steady, which further drives up prices.
