Latvia has stated that it does not perceive any threat of an attack from Russia.

Currently, the Baltic countries are not facing an imminent threat of a full-scale attack from the Russian Federation.
В Латвии отметили, что не рассматривают возможность нападения со стороны России как угрозу.

The Baltic states are currently not facing an imminent total attack from the Russian Federation.

This was stated by the commander of the National Armed Forces of Latvia, Leonid Kalniņš, as reported by RBK-Ukraine referencing Delfi.

According to him, Russia is currently engaged in the war in Ukraine and is suffering "quite significant losses." However, the RF is still capable of carrying out diversions or very localized small operations.

"If we consider the situation on a much larger scale, such as a total attack on the entire country, Latvia, or the Baltic states, then, of course, this is completely excluded," he believes.

Kalniņš noted that in the event of even a small localized aggression against any settlement in the Baltics, there would be an immediate response from NATO allies in accordance with Article 5 of NATO.

"I can say with complete confidence that Article 5 is operational, and no one has revoked it," Kalniņš added.

In his view, Russian policy is aimed at a comprehensive approach in hybrid attacks. This means conducting diversions both in the physical sense and in cyberspace. Additionally, the RF may attempt to influence society by inciting discontent, for example, regarding the economic situation.

Mandatory Service in Latvia

It is worth noting that military exercises will begin in Latvia in September with the armies of NATO member countries.

Furthermore, the Latvian government has officially adopted amendments to the military service law. These amendments will allow citizens of foreign countries to serve in the Latvian army in the event of mobilization.
