The Chancellor of Germany, Olaf Scholz, discussed with Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte the idea of granting Ukraine a neutral status similar to that of Finland during the Cold War.

According to Politico journalist Hans von der Burkhardt, this proposal involves the establishment of an international contact group that would include China, India, and Brazil to facilitate peace negotiations with Russia.

The main concept of this scenario is for Ukraine to remain a non-aligned state, which Scholz believes could ease negotiations with the Russian Federation. At the same time, the journalist noted that offering Ukraine the prospect of NATO membership would render such an agreement impossible. However, Finland itself no longer considers neutrality an adequate means of protection and joined NATO last year, as Russia's aggressive policies have become a clear threat to Europe's security.

The Finnish side also critically assesses Scholz's proposal. The Finnish Ambassador to Berlin, Kai Sauer, emphasized that Finland's neutral status is a relic of the past.

"It is not in our interest to restore any artificial spheres of influence. The model of neutrality that Finland had during the Cold War relates to a historical period that we should have long since moved on from," the journalist highlighted, recalling the ambassador's words.
