The Russian Federation managed to repair and build over 1,500 tanks and 2,800 infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and armored personnel carriers (APCs) in 2024. This indicates that Russians have been able to compensate for a significant portion of the armored vehicle losses from the previous year.
This information comes from RBK-Ukraine, citing a report from the American Institute for the Study of War.
It remains unclear whether Russia can repair and manufacture enough tanks and armored vehicles to replace losses in Ukraine and equip new units. According to IISS estimates, in 2024, Russia repaired and built over 1,500 tanks and 2,800 IFVs and APCs, which allowed it to offset tank losses and three-quarters of its armored vehicle losses from last year.
At the same time, the expansion of the Russian armed forces exacerbates the shortage of equipment. Russia may also face a shortage of spare parts for repairing tanks and armored vehicles. IISS estimates indicate a high likelihood that Soviet-era tanks and armored vehicles in Russian stockpiles are in worn condition, which could complicate equipment replacement in 2025 and beyond.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, citing data from Ukrainian intelligence, stated that Russia continues to form new divisions. In January 2023, then-Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu announced plans to create 14 new military divisions in the coming years.
The Russian command is distributing new and repaired equipment among new formations and units already engaged in combat on the front lines. In the long term, Russia may face challenges in equipping its army with technology if it continues to deplete Soviet stockpiles without increasing its own production of tanks and armored vehicles.
It is worth noting that the Institute for the Study of War previously reported that the production rate of Russia's Shahed strike drones may decline. Additionally, the aggressor state may shift to decoy drones to bypass and overload Ukrainian air defense systems.
We also reported that over the past day, Russian invaders suffered losses of 1,200 personnel. Ukrainian forces also neutralized 17 tanks, 16 armored combat vehicles, 81 artillery systems, four multiple launch rocket systems, three air defense systems, 152 operational-tactical level drones, 156 vehicles, and one piece of special equipment belonging to the occupiers.
