The Kalmius River, flowing through the Donetsk region, is severely polluted due to the actions of Russian invaders. The water situation is particularly critical near the temporarily occupied city of Mariupol.
This information comes from RBK-Ukraine referencing the Center for National Resistance (CNR).
Industrial waste and household garbage are being dumped into the Kalmius, and the water is also heavily contaminated due to sewage discharges.
The CNR notes that the river has nearly turned into a dump due to the criminal negligence of the Russian occupiers.
According to the Center, the water situation in the Kalmius River is especially dire near the temporarily occupied Mariupol, where it is "toxic, has a yellow-brown color, and emits a sharp unpleasant odor."
"This is not surprising, as Russian occupiers are trying to cover up the traces of their terrorist activities in the river. It has reached the point where contractors, brought to the city devastated by Kremlin missiles from all regions of Russia, are dumping construction debris into the river," the CNR publication states.
Currently, the channel of the Kalmius is almost completely filled in, and the water flow has decreased by five times.
It is worth noting that the Kalmius originates on the southern slope of the Donetsk Ridge and flows into the Sea of Azov in the city of Mariupol. It runs through the territories of the occupied cities of Donetsk and Mariupol (at the river's mouth).
In total, the river is nearly 210 kilometers long, and its watershed area is 5,070 square kilometers.
The CNR also emphasizes that due to the freshwater crisis in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, such behavior by the invaders regarding the Kalmius River only exacerbates the situation.
"For example, in the temporarily occupied Tavricheskoye, the water supply situation has completely spiraled out of control. The Russian occupying 'authorities' are unable to overcome the crisis that they have essentially caused themselves," the Center reported.
There, tap water cannot be used for cooking or drinking.
Earlier, it was reported that Russian occupiers are literally destroying the unique biosphere reserve "Askania-Nova".
It was also reported that Russians are building landfills in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine to service regions of the Russian Federation.
