Russia has deliberately inflicted damage on Ukraine's gas infrastructure. However, this does not pose any risks to the energy security of the European Union.
This was stated by European Commission representative Anna-Kaisa Ikonen, as reported by RBK-Ukraine citing "Interfax-Ukraine."
"Yesterday we were informed about an attack on an above-ground facility of this underground gas storage in western Ukraine. We are in constant contact with Ukraine and are negotiating to assess the exact scale of the damage, as well as any indications regarding the security situation of gas supplies to Ukraine. According to our latest information on this matter, there are no immediate risks to the security of gas supplies to the EU," said Anna-Kaisa Ikonen.
She noted that the European Commission, along with the Energy Community Secretariat, continues to monitor the situation closely. She also stated that the EU has been "observing the attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure for more than two years."
"We condemn the continuous attacks by Russia on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian energy system is under extreme pressure due to the relentless assaults by Russian armed forces. Unfortunately, it is expected that Russia will likely continue to target critical energy infrastructure. The EU continues to support the Ukrainian people and provides unprecedented assistance in this regard," Ikonen added.
It is worth mentioning that yesterday morning, Russian forces launched a large-scale attack, deploying 117 aerial targets against Ukraine. The air defense forces successfully destroyed 77 of them.
