The European Union is bracing for potential economic upheavals following the news of Donald Trump's election as President of the United States. According to Politico, European officials anticipate that his policy of economic protectionism could trigger a large-scale trade war between the U.S. and the EU.

Trump has repeatedly expressed his intention to protect the American market through high tariffs on imports. During his campaign, he promised to impose tariffs of 60% on Chinese goods and 10-20% on European products. This could have serious implications for both economic relations and diplomatic cooperation between the two regions, especially considering Europe's increasing dependence on American liquefied gas.

European diplomats and trade experts recall Trump's trade restrictions from 2018, when he imposed a 25% tariff on steel and a 10% tariff on aluminum from Europe. There are now concerns that the new Trump administration may not only repeat these measures but also intensify them. According to the Kiel Institute for the World Economy, the implementation of such plans could lead to a 0.5% decline in the EU's GDP, and up to 3.2% for Germany.

"We need to prepare for a much more aggressive tone and possibly attempts at coercion in transatlantic commercial diplomatic relations," emphasized David Kleimann, a senior trade expert at the ODI think tank.
