The Vietnamese military is modernizing its outdated T-54 tanks, taking cues from Ukraine. They are installing homemade armor to protect against drones.
This information comes from RBK-Ukraine citing Defence Blog.
According to the publication, Vietnam is also trying to shield its tanks from potential drone attacks. These improvised armored screens, known as "protective cages," are being mounted on top and on the sides of the T-54. It is likely that Vietnam is following Ukraine's example in securing its tanks.
The new armor consists of metal grids designed to reduce the threat from strike drones. However, these cages have limited effectiveness against anti-tank guided missiles or large munitions dropped from military drones. They do not provide comprehensive protection against side attacks from other weapon systems.
Such actions by the Vietnamese army indicate the growing impact of drone warfare and the need for innovative countermeasures. In particular, Vietnam's efforts to enhance the survivability of T-54 tanks reflect the challenges faced by militaries worldwide as they adapt to modern warfare.
Previously, we reported that the U.S. had delivered Abrams tanks to Ukraine without upgraded armor. This is why Ukrainian forces were forced to seek alternatives.
