Today, December 17, a partial readiness check of the National Armed Forces units has been announced throughout Latvia.
This is reported by RBK-Ukraine citing Delfi.
According to the publication, the aim of this decision is to assess the combat readiness of military units through training exercises. Specifically, improvements will be made afterward if necessary.
As part of the readiness check, military equipment and personnel from the Latvian Armed Forces will be relocated to various locations across the country to carry out designated tasks.
Interestingly, this readiness check is planned in advance but comes as a surprise to the units. It is not linked to changes in the security environment or other events.
It is worth noting that mandatory military service is required in Latvia for men aged 18 to 27. The duration of service is 11 months. As of 2024, women will have the option to serve on a voluntary basis.
Earlier, it became known that military exercises with NATO member states will begin in Latvia starting in September.
Additionally, the Latvian government has officially adopted amendments to the military service law. These amendments will allow citizens of foreign countries to serve in the Latvian army in the event of mobilization.
