North Korea may have begun construction on a new submarine. It is likely that it could operate on nuclear fuel.
This information comes from RBK-Ukraine citing The War Zone.
According to South Korean intelligence, partial signs have been detected that seemingly indicate the start of submarine construction in North Korea. However, it is still unclear whether this construction involves a nuclear-powered submarine.
The project is in its early stages.
One representative from the South Korean intelligence agency stated that construction of the submarine has been observed in the northeastern area of Sinpo. The vessels are likely being built at the submarine factory in Pongdae.
According to reports, this submarine will be significantly larger than those previously showcased by North Korea. However, its exact dimensions and other details will become clearer as the construction progresses.
"The assessment by South Korean military officials that the new submarine could be nuclear-powered is likely based on its size, as there is currently no public evidence that North Korea has developed a suitable nuclear reactor for such a vessel. Nevertheless, Pyongyang's leadership has made statements indicating plans to construct a submarine with a nuclear power system," writes The War Zone.
It is important to remember that North Korea has been engaged in a nuclear weapons program for decades. According to media reports, the North Koreans have recently conducted at least 6 underground tests of this weapon.
Dictator Kim Jong-un has stated that Pyongyang will use all weapons, including nuclear ones, in the event of a threat to the sovereignty of the DPRK.
At the same time, South Korea believes that the DPRK is preparing for nuclear tests ahead of the U.S. presidential elections.
