The elimination of the consequences from yesterday's Russian airstrike on the protective arch of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant is ongoing today, February 15. There are no signs of combustion, and the radiation levels near the site do not exceed permissible values.
This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing the State Emergency Service (SES).
According to SES head Andrey Danik, as of 3:00 PM, there is no observed combustion of the insulating material.
He explained that climbers are conducting work "to partially uncover the shelter structures and fill voids with extinguishing substances."
Danik also revealed several factors that complicate the work of SES specialists, including sub-zero temperatures, snow, and ice on the structures.
"Rescuers are working directly outside the protective structure - at heights exceeding 100 meters," the head of the Service stated.
Regarding the radiation situation, Danik emphasized that air quality monitoring is conducted continuously and added that the radiation background "at the industrial site near the ChNPP does not exceed permissible levels."
Recall that on the morning of February 14, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky reported an overnight strike on the shelter of the fourth power unit of the ChNPP. As a result of this Russian drone attack, the new safe confinement was damaged, and a fire broke out.
At that time, the head of state clarified that it was a UAV with an explosive warhead.
It was also reported that fragments of the Russian drone's fuselage with a warhead and serial number were found inside and near the ChNPP shelter.
After the attack, specialists did not record an increase in radiation levels. As suggested by the Ministry of Energy, in the case of significant damage, there is a risk of a substantial increase in radiation levels.
Today, around half past eleven, it was reported that the fire at the Chernobyl NPP continued.
