Суд в Полтаве арестовал бывшего чиновника Минобороны Лиева по делу о пулеметах.

The Poltava court has taken former Ministry of Defense official Alexander Liev into custody. There is an option to post bail of 9 million hryvnias.

This was reported by RBK-Ukraine citing suspilne.media.

According to the publication, Liev has been detained for 52 days. He is suspected of embezzling state funds.

During the announcement of the decision, Judge Elena Shevskaya stated that Alexander Liev would remain in the pre-trial detention center until March 14 of this year. He may be released from custody on bail exceeding 9 million hryvnias.

The hearing for Alexander Liev's case has been postponed twice due to the prosecutor's absence. The consideration of the prosecutor's motion for selecting a preventive measure for Alexander Liev was closed to journalists.

According to Alexander Liev's lawyer Nazar Kulchytsky, they plan to file an appeal against the court's decision.

The Liev Case

On January 14, the State Bureau of Investigation exposed Alexander Liev for supplying 200 defective machine guns to the Armed Forces of Ukraine. On the same day, he was notified of the suspicion.

This is not Liev's first case. In 2024, Alexander Liev was a suspect in a case involving the misappropriation of nearly one and a half billion hryvnias in the procurement of ammunition for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. This well-known case is referred to as the "Lviv Arsenal".

Additionally, on February 1, 2023, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted searches at the homes of former Ministry of Defense officials involved in the procurement scandal. On that same day, Liev submitted his resignation.

In March of last year, the High Anti-Corruption Court altered the preventive measure for Alexander Liev from custody to personal obligation, releasing him from the pre-trial detention center.
